Schooley, S. (2023). How to break down Workplace Politics. Business News Daily. https://www.businessnewsdaily.com/6374-fix-workplace-politics.html
Summary:
Workplace politics can be a significant source of stress and frustration for employees. The negative impact it has on morale, productivity, and overall workplace culture should not be ignored. However, there are strategies that can be implemented to minimize these workplace politics and create a healthier work environment. In this blog post, we will explore the three of my biggest takeaways from the article "Are Workplace Politics Destroying Your Business? Here’s How to Fix It" and discuss how they can be applied to foster a positive workplace.
Workplace politics can lead to unfair treatment, exclusion, and a toxic work environment. Employees who feel mistreated or excluded are likely to experience decreased job satisfaction and increased stress levels. Collaboration among team members may suffer, as a result can decrease productivity and innovation in a workplace. Recognizing these negative consequences is the first step towards addressing workplace politics.
To try and stop workplace politics, it is crucial to
foster transparency and open communication. Encouraging employees to share
their thoughts and concerns openly can help build trust and reduce the
likelihood of political behavior. Additionally, promoting a culture of fairness
and meritocracy ensures that decisions are based on qualifications and
performance rather than personal relationships or hidden agendas.
Leadership plays a important role in addressing workplace politics. Leaders should set the tone by promoting ethical behavior and promoting a culture of trust and respect. By actively discouraging political behavior, leaders can create an environment where employees feel valued and supported. Accessible leaders who encourage open dialogue and actively listen to their employees' concerns can help prevent the formation of political factions. Addressing conflicts promptly and fairly demonstrates that the organization takes workplace politics seriously and is committed to resolving issues in a transparent manner.
Personal thoughts:
As someone currently working in a workplace that experiences workplace politics, I can relate to the article's insights. In my role as a patient transporter in a hospital, collaboration and communication are crucial to ensure the best service for our patients. Unfortunately, certain individuals in my workplace prioritize their personal interests over the team's goals.
In the beginning I have faced challenges as certain experienced colleagues would assign tasks meant for them to me, using their experience against my lack of it. However, as I gained more experience, I took it upon myself to step up and assume a leadership role, although unofficially. I strive to ensure that everyone contributes equally, and that the workload is distributed fairly.
